It is definitely good to make some time to just chat, and for a mentor to tell some stories. You can learn a lot about interacting with people and the kinds of situations you're likely to encounter, very valuable.

Hi,
This is a very nice list. I liked all the points you mentioned. But I especially liked:

"Give them the benefit of working with you directly"

This is one of the best ways for a mentee to learn.

I would like to add one more point:

"Have lunch with your mentee often "

When I was a graduate student, I often had lunch with a professor. I learned a lot of things (both technical and non-technical) from the discussions we had over lunch.

I agree, especially as a boss one of the key attributes is being able to have some trust in your people.

You're right these are not patterns in the design pattern sense, I didn't mean to imply that they were. I was simply applying some familiar terminology to another concept.

Setting expectations upfront and nurturing the personal relationship are definite musts in my opinion. I wish some of the folks at my work would read this, very good information. I think as a boss/mentor being able to sit back far enough to let the employees be awesome on their own speaks volumes about the kind of leader you are.

This is great advice and a nice post but these are not patterns. Design patterns are should possess a number of things that these don't. See: http://martinfowler.com/articles/writingPatterns.html

Design patterns are actually very difficult to write properly. It took four very smart people several years to write the original design patterns book for example.
