Exactly, and it is up to you to make sure this doesn’t happen, which is why we read books, blogs and industry news to keep abreast of what’s on the horizon. Software and I guess IT in general is one of the few fields where staying abreast of your industry is completely non-optional.

That’s right, you would benefit if you apply these to your software development career, but you would benefit even more if you treat this as a general life rule. I guess one of my goals was to get people to arrive at that conclusion themselves :).

agreed, another huge concern is the fact that several people don’t even realize they’ve been left behind until several years into their career. Just because you are awesome at something today does not mean your skillset will be needed 10 years from now (or sometimes, even 1 year from now).

I think it’s not only subject about programming, but about whole life. We must extract and process all experience which life is gave to us, but it’s, as I think, came only with time. Call it wise, if you want =)

It is something we should always watch out for, if there is one industry where one always needs to extract the maximum learning from everything they do, software development is it.

It moves way to fast to coast even for a little while (and you’ll be bored if you do anyway :)).
